LUCY ARANDA’S STORY

EARLY EXPERIENCE

My public health career began at 17, when I arranged to trade classroom hours for real-world experience as an assistant to my town’s public health nurse. There, I helped organize health fairs, coordinate vaccination clinics, and manage vital records while gaining firsthand exposure to community health.

I earned my B.A. in Public Health (with honors) from the University of South Carolina in 2015, and broadened my perspectives through international studies in Mexico and Thailand.

As a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Maternal and Child Health Project in Guatemala (2016–2018), I created health curricula in Spanish, co-led community health projects with the Ministry of Health, and trained local auxiliaries nurses on behavior change theory.

EDUCATION AND INNOVATION

I earned my Master of Public Health with honors from Emory University in 2021 while working at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) during COVID-19’s digital pivot.

I earned my M.S. in Information Systems from Kennesaw State University in 2025 with a 4.0 GPA while working full time as a Program Specialist at the CDC. During this time, I served as lead co-author on a published research paper advancing inclusive AI for people with disabilities, presented it at the Southern Association for Information Systems Conference where it won Best Student Paper,
and was honored as the program’s
Outstanding Student of the Year.
